Horace Timespan (dec 8, 65 BC – nov 27, 8 BC)
Description:
Leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus. Horace originally fought on the losing Republican side at the Battles of Philippi in 42 BC.
Later he gained the patronage of Octavian's (later Emperor Augustus) lieutenant Maecenas and is thought to have accompanied him at the battle of Actium in 31 BC. His patronage led to the gift of his famous Sabine farm, now known to have been located near Licenza in Italy. This enabled Horace to devote more time to poetry and he became the most prominent poet of the early Empire under Augustus.
