Isaac Beeckman (feb 28, 1588 – oct 6, 1637)
Description:
- dutch philosopher and scientist who studied theology, literature, mathematics and medicine
- considered to be one of the most educated men in europe that time -> influenced many
- developed atomism := matter is composed of atoms
- found that the fundamental frequendy of a vibrating string is proportional to the reciprocal value of the lenght of the string
-> was good friends with Descartes whom he has met on the market place in Breda where he (RD) asked him to translate a poster from dutch to french
-> he convinced Descartes to devote his studies to a mathematical approach to nature
- shared his idea of atomism with him
Descartes' first work is devoted to Beeckman
