American Revolution (jul 25, 1775 – jul 25, 1783)
Description:
Success for the Colonists
- Two sides went to war after the publication of the Declaration of Independence
- Americans won the war even though Washington's poorly trained army faced the well-trained army of the most powerful country in the world (Britain)
Reason for colonists' success
1. Americans' motivation was much stronger: defending homeland
2. Overconfident British generals made many mistakes
3. Time: fighting an overseas war costs a lot of money, meaning higher taxes for British citizens- Britain could not sustain this for long and eventually called for peace
4. Lous XVI of France wanted to weaken its rival Britain
- 1778: entered war
- 1781: 9,500 Americans and 7,800 French trapped a British army near Yorktown commanded by Cornwallis- Britain surrendered and America won independence
