- nature
- happiness (new idea for peasants)
- progress (new idea for peasants)
- liberty

Salons:
- social gatherings to discuss/debate Enlightenment ideas: philosophers, writers, artists, scientists
- held in the drawing rooms fo wealthy women's mansions in Paris: gave women access to information & intellectual ideas

Social Contract: an agreement that citizens make with each other to accet the rule o central society (not between ruler & citizen) / an agreement between people on what they want their government to be like- agreeing to give up some rights in order to gain protection
