- epistemologist- if contents of the soul entirely consist of impressions acquired through observation, there's no guarantee that they are faithful rendition of the world -> could be completely self-generated ≠ method of observation promoted by men of science
- basic idea of IDEALISM := human knowledge is a construction of the mind and doesn't necessarily correspond to an outside world (≠realism)
