The partition of Palestine into Two states, Arab war. (feb 1, 1947 – jul 20, 1949)
Description:
In February 1947, the British proposed that the United Nations consider the future of Palestine and take over relations in the region amid ongoing tension.
The UN adopted a resolution to split Palestine into two, independent states. These two states being a Jewish state and an Arab state, the Arabs opposed this. Jerusalem remained under international control due to its cultural significance to many religions.
Palestinians continued to refuse or recognise the resolution, and when Israel officially declared its independence on May 15th 1948, the Israel-Arab war commenced. 5 Arab nations, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Jordan all fought against Israel.
Israel won the war with backing from foreign powers. The war itself lasted from 30 Nov 1947 – 20 July 1949
