Sui/Tang Dynasty (China) (jan 1, 581 – jan 1, 907)
Description:
The short lived Sui dynasty would become notorious for its massive construction projects, high tax burden and devastating wars fought over Korea. Its expansion of the Great Wall of China and other large-scale projects would lead to the deaths of many forcibly conscripted workers.
All these factors would lead to their collapse after less than 40 years, as they were deposed and replaced by Li Yuan of the Tang, who would become Emperor Gaozu. He succesfully defeated his rivals and ensured the unity of China.
He would be succeeded by his son Taizong who would become known as one of the greatest emperors of Chinese history and his reign would be seen as a golden age of Chinese culture, stability and influence. His own heir Gaozong, would be largely controlled by his wife Wu Zetian, though this too would be a part of China's golden age as her leadership proved highly effective.
Their legal and administrative reforms would be the basis of Chinese law and government for centuries. Their reign would also see the rise and fall of Buddhist influence in China for a time.
