The Mongol Empire (jan 1, 1206 – jan 1, 1368)
Description:
The largest empire of its time and largest empire ever in terms of contiguous borders, the Mongol Empire covered modern countries as varying as Russia, Iraq and China.
Ruling over such a vast, cosmopolitan enterprise, the Mongol Khans endeavored to maintain internal peace, and great significance was placed on providing services to any traders or settlers who would be travelling their lands. Invitations for priests and wise men of various faiths were sent out to ensure the needs of religious travelers were met and great pains were taken to ensure their security.
During the reign of Kublai Khan, the conquest of China was completed, with Kublai creating his own dynasty to reign over China, the Yuan dynasty.
In time however the Empire would collapse due to internal power struggles, rivalries and civil war. While the Yuan were nominally in control of all khagnates, the reality was that most acted independently of the Yuan's decision making.
The empire would be divided into the Golden Horde in Eastern Europe, the Chagatai Khanate in Central Asia, the Ilkhanate in Southwest Asia, and the Yuan dynasty who ruled China from what is now Beijing. Each would in time be destroyed by entities such as Ming China, the Mamelukes and The Grand Duchy of Muscovy.
