Tokugawa Ieyasu: completed unification of Japan
1600: defeated rivals at the Battle of Sekigahara
Earned respect: became the sole ruler (shogun)
Moved the capital of Japan to Edo, a small fishing village (became Tokyo)
Tamed daimyo through "alternate attendance policy" & other restrictions
- alternate attendance policy = daimyo were required to spend alternate years at their home capitals or at the shogun's court in Edo
Rule of law > rule of sword: restoring centralized government
Founded Tokugawa Shogunate (lasted until 1867)
