Description:
1467: civil war, chaos; end of centralized rule & old feudal system
Territorial lords come to power: samurai/warrior-chieftains (daimyo)
- offered peasants & others protection in return for loyalty
- became lords in a new type of Japanese feudalism
- emperor had leadership title but no power
New Japanese feudalism resembled European feudalism
- daimyo built fortified castles & created armies of samurai on horses
- later added foot soldiers with guns to armies (muskets)
- rival daimyo fought each other for territory (led to disorder)
Europeans began coming to Japan despite disorder
- Japanese welcomed traders/missionaries from Portugal & other countries
- introduced new technologies and ideas
- after a century Japanese no longer welcomed Europeans (they were too aggressive)
