Description:

1636: Manchus conquered Korea and made it a vassal state before conquering China
- Korea's political relationship with China stayed the same throughout 1600s & 1700s but Koreans started to show more nationalism toward Korea (seen in art)

Chinese isolation continued: foreign countries could only trade at special ports and had to pay tribute
- "kowtow" was mandatory to allow trade: ritual involving kneeling in front of emperor and touching head to ground 9 times
- Dutch agreed: paid tribute through gifts & "kowtow"- China gave them silver, porcelain, & tea
- Great Britain did not agree but wanted to trade (sent letter to China- look at Qian-long notes)
