World War I (jan 1, 1914 – jan 1, 1918)

Description:

The complex system of European alliances combined with a surge in nationalistic sentiment and greater than ever industrial capacity lead to one of the most devastating wars in history and the worst in history in terms of deaths for Britain, France and Serbia among others.

After grinding offences which resulted in the deaths of millions as tactics sought to catch up with innovations in machinery and weaponry, an armistice eventually was signed, and began on the 11th November 1918.

"The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori."
- Wilfred Owen, a prominent WWI poet, killed one week before the armistice.
