Reagan sought to weaken the Soviet Union by supporting anticommunist rebellions around the world. After the USSR invaded Afghanistan, the US funded and trained the anti-Soviet rebels, the mujahadeen. Soviet forces finally withdrew from Afghanistan in 1988.Added to timeline:
