From 1836 to 1853 there was a political party to oppose President Andrew Jackson and Democrats. Whig stood for national banking, protective tariffs, and federal aid. The Whig Party lead to the Civil War because the North became more powerful because of the tariffs, but the South became weaker because they did not like tariffs.Added to timeline:
