French and Indian War (jan 1, 1754 – feb 10, 1763)
Description:
Also known as the Seven Years War, the French and Indian war was fought across the world. On the American front, (initially led unsuccessfully by George Washington) British soldiers, and some American colonists, fought the French and their Native American allies.
The war also inspired Benjamin Franklin's Join or Die snake cartoon in 1754 and his Albany plan, an early proposal for colonial unification.
Despite the early losses, Britain won the war. It resulted in large land gains, including much of Canada from France and Florida from Spain.
