Snowy Mountain Hydro Electric Scheme (jan 1, 1949 – jan 1, 1974)
Description:
The Snow Mountain Hydro Electric is a hydroelectricity and irrigation complex located in NSW. It was a massive project to build which over 100,000 people worked on, where 65% of the workers were migrants from more than 30 nationalities.
Along the duration of the project, seven power stations, 16 dams, 80 kilometres of aqueducts, 145 kilometres of tunnels and 1,600 kilometres of roads and railway tracks were built by the workers.
In total, the scheme cost $820 million but it also brougt thousands of migrants to Australia. It is also considered as one of the engeneering wonders of the world.
