Immigration Restriction Act (dec 23, 1901 – jan 1, 1973)
Description:
This is also known as the White Australia Policy and affected people from migrating into Australia for 57 years. The reason for the Act was to limit noon-white immigrants from coming to Australia. It was supposedly to keep Australia 'British'.
One way of limiting migrants was through the dictation test. Migrants could be asked to write 50 words in a random European language, as the dictation officers said. An example could be a Malay speaking immigrant could be asked to write 50 words in French.
