Description:
1. Two slaves, Dred Scott and his wife, sued for freedom because they had lived in a free state that outlawed slavery
2. After 11 years, the Supreme Court declared that slaves couldn’t participate in federal court because African Americans were not considered US citizens
3. Startled the North, as the Supreme Court made it impossible for Congress to end slavery due to Black people’s lack of citizenship
