Prohibition (jan 16, 1919 – dec 5, 1933)

Description:

The prohibition was a result of the ratification of the 18th amendment, which passed with a 68% support rating in the House of Representatives and a 76% support rating in the Senate. While almost all alcohol was illegal, wine was legal for religious purposes. Private ownership of alcohol was also allowed, but was often illegalized by local laws. The amendment resulted in the emergence of several gangs that supplied people with alcohol. These gangs were known as "bootleggers" and they supplied alcohol to "speakeasies" that illegally sold alcohol to the general public.
