The 1950s - notalgia + MENNONITES (jan 1, 1950 – dec 1, 1959)

Description:

The 1950s was full of high marriage rates and low divorce rates, as well as the ability to support a family with only a highschool diploma. However, that stable society was forged by war -the Spanish-American War in 1898, World War I, World War II and the Korean War - so many wars so even when the country was at peace it was governed in a way where if a war was to burst they would be ready.

That stability was possibly because of it. The sense of American nationality and community originated from the “we’re-all-in-this-together spirit, with outsider common enemies surpassing domestic politics of right and left wing. Many conservative critics focused on the 1960s revolution (like the civil rights movement) as the wrong turn of American history, but according to the interviewee Mr. Frum, the 50s weren’t the “American way” at all, but a product of wartime discipline that persisted into the rebellious 60s. During this discipline, the government had much control over its citizens, with very high taxes (highest possible was 95%), military draft, strict economic regulation, unrestricted wiretapping, “urban renewal” and “closed shop” labor union agreements. He also believes that human nature is not fixed and immutable, and will continue to change, citing changes in sexual attitudes as an example.

-Belize's colonies date back to the late 1950s, when a group of over 3,000 Canadian Mennonites immigrated there from Mexico. Their arrival followed an agreement with the Belizean government, which offered them land, religious freedom and exemption from certain taxes and military service

---> The country gets the fruits of their agriculture, dominating its domestic poultry and dairy markets despite being only 4% of the population.
