Paris Peace Conference (jun 18, 1918 – jun 28, 1918)
Description:
Wilson goes to Paris to represent the U.S. to sign the peace treaty and offer his fourteen-points, a blueprint for a new democratic world order and lasting peace. At the conference, the Allies wanted to blame Germany for the war and demanded land and financial retribution. They redrew the map of Europe by splitting up Germany’s territories. Germans felt betrayed, outraged and humiliated, leaving them in debt $33 billion. The Allies accepted Wilson’s idea for a League of Nations. The League of Nations would establish rules of international conduct and resolve conflicts between nations through rational and peaceful means. The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, and declared an end to WWI. Wilson compromised on his fourteen points and many American citizens feel betrayed. The Senate does not ratify the Treaty of Versailles and the United States do not become a member of the League of Nations.
