Kerensky Offensive (jul 1, 1917 – jul 19, 1917)

Description:

Also known as the June offensive

- Kerensky became Minister of War after Milyukov resigned
- This was the last Russian offensive in WW1
- Everyone wanted peace at the time so the offensive was not well-liked
- Kerensky toured the front line encouraging soldiers to support the new attack
- The attack was not successful. German reinforcements strengthened the Austro-Hungarian troops.
- 48 Russian battalions refused to fight
- Over 150,000 Russian soldiers lost their lives and even more deserted the front line

Consequences:
- Weakened the Provisional Government and made them look weak and ineffective. Also they sent workers and peasants to their deaths while factory owners and landowners stayed safely out of the fighting
- Weakened the Mensheviks and the SRs, as both of these groups had joined the Government in May and promised to work to bring about peace. However this change and their involvement in planning the offensive made them look like hypocrites
