Part of a long tradition in which aristocracy and monarchy battled each other for supremacy; began when the Duke of Guise was infuriated to see a group of young Huguenots worshiping in a barn and had them killed; tore France apart for decades and left it wrecked by distrust; on one side were the Huguenots, and on the other side were the Catholics
