Causes:Identification with Yugoslavia as a nation was not strong & nationalisms from pre-WW1 intensified
Totalitarian regime did not allow it to form into a democratic entity- the communist president Tito tried to suppress nationalist sentiments, but when he died in 1980 nationalism came back stronger
Borders did not represent ethnic divisions
West increased hostility and sanctions towards still-communist Yugoslavia
History of fighting and disdain between cultures
