Pentagon Built (sep 11, 1941 – jan 15, 1943)
Description:
As World War II began to ramp up in intensity, it looked as if the United States may enter the war soon. The United States military staff was so large that they were spread all over Washington D.C. To bring them all together in one area, Army Brigadier General Brehon Sommervell proposed that they build a temporary building that could house all staff in one location. In a matter of 16 months, the Pentagon was constructed. Its unique shape was due to the fact that the land where they were building was surrounded by five streets. During World War II, the Pentagon housed the entire War Department. Although the Pentagon was meant to eventually turn into a hospital or warehouse, after the war, the United States realized that there was still a need for a central military command center. Today the Pentagon still holds high ranking officials from the branches of the military as well as the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Exactly sixty years from the start of construction, 9/11 would happen and destroy some of the building.
