The Turn of the Heinous Sons (jan 1, 33850 – jan 1, 34003)

Description:

850.M33 - The recently promoted chief librarian Zazel, having been working in the shadows spreading corruption since Violence's death gets to work actively turning marines.

[883.M33 - Zazel receives word from his daemon manipulator (Yarrow) that he must turn the Sons of the righteous within the next hundred years]

[888.M33] - Growing frustrated by a lack of success, Zazel turns to corrupting the chapter geneseed stocks.

910.M33 - Zazel begins to develop physical abnormalities, such as a less pronounced nose, a more forward mouth, crackled skin, and long, thin, silky hair running only along the top of his head and back of his neck.

[931.M33] - Zazel, still not managing to corrupt the Sons fast enough, turns to corrupting the human staff of the Nauta as well.

996.M33 - [Yarrow forces Zazel to act.] Zazel accompanied by his traitor marines begin entering astartes chambers (1st company) and executing them in their sleep. At the same time, the more honourable of the traitors are tasked with sealing off access to specific assets (such as the dreadnought reliquaries and armouries).

Before long the noise awakens the loyalists. They mobilize quickly, however, they are prevented from accessing much of the better weaponry, and struggle to combat the traitors. Within 24 hours all but 6 loyalists of the 1st company are dead, along with almost 100 other loyalist marines.

996-003.M34 - The Nauta is turned into a warzone between the well equipped, well positioned traitors (with additional daemon reinforcements) and the more numerous loyalists.

000-M34 - the greater daemon Yarrow is seen on the Nauta for the last time. [He was present there only as a last resort, in order to speed up the defeat of the loyalists so that the SotR might fight for Abaddon in the 4th Black Crusade. Having seen the slow progress of Zazel, he deemed this goal impossible and began focusing less of his time on the endeavor.]

002.M34 - Many of the traitor forces abandon the battle and flee to the warp.

003.M34 - The defeat of the traitor sons being imminent, Zazel attempts to escape into the warp with the chapter geneseed stocks. Youenn Dran follows him there with a large contingent of marines.

The warp was found to be oddly hospitable, and more empty than usual. When they eventually caught up with Zazel he was already dead. They discovered his corpse in a large metallic fortress, apparently unharmed other than clear psychic strain. [The warp signatures in the area were also unbelievably faint, in fact, 3rd company sergeant Rimma stated "I'd let kids play here it's so quiet." Youenn Dran, however, suggested they return fast, likening the experience to his youth, when they would visit the ocean moon for holidays. It was filled with life, you could dive for hours and never be more than a few feet from a fish. Only once was it barren and in all his years of service as an astartes Youenn Dran lamented he would never face a creature as dreadful as he saw that day.

At the end of the conflict the Sons of the Righteous numbered around 250.
