Afghanistan and the Mujahideen (jan 1, 1979 – jan 1, 1992)
Description:
In 1979, the Soviet-Aligned Democratic Republic of Afghanistan began a conflict with the Afghan Mujahideen, a group of islamist rebels, who were backed by the United States. The war resulted in a loss for the Soviet Union, and the Mujahideen after years of civil war signed a power-sharing agreement. The following photo shows wounded afghan guerillas having arrived at the Norton Air Force Base in the U.S.
