Battle of Okiwana (mar 26, 1945 – sep 7, 1945)
Description:
The Battle of Okiwana was the last major battle of the war in the Pacific. The United States wanted to take over the island of Okiwana because it was the last thing that was holding them back from attacking the Japanese mainland. There was a major force of Japanese soldiers protecting this island though it would not be easy. The United States soldiers' morale was low as they first boarded that island. They thought that there would be major casualties as they were getting onto the island but it was quite the opposite. there was little opposition as they were trying to get to the beaches of Okiwana. But this is exactly what the Japanese wanted, they had the battleship Yamato that was going to attack the 5th Fleet which was the US ships in the area, and then rained down on the soldiers and absolutely destroy them. but the United States submarines located the Yamato before it attacked the fifth Fleet therefore the Yamato was noticed and it was bombed and sunk. Now all the United States seem to do was clear out all the Japanese troops on the island. This was no easy task though, it concluded in many casualties and hard-fought land as the United States took many months to clear out the Japanese from this island but had many losses and casualties. As the Japanese knew that the United States was going to attack their mainland after this many committed suicide and took their own lives. one of the most important factors of this battle though was kamikaze pilots. These were pilots that sacrificed their own lives as they drove their planes into United States ships. They cost many casualties to the United States in this battle and were Japan's most effective weapon.
