Indian Mutiny (may 10, 1857 – nov 1, 1858)
Description:
Indian sepoy rebellion against the East India Company (EIC) beginning in Meerut (a garrison town), triggered by the use of pork and beef grease in cartridges given to the sepoys. Largely spread to north and central India, but not the south (10% of popul, 1/6th of landmass). Mutiny was suppressed but EIC rule ended and transferred to British Crown.
