- Countries on the Atlantic rim of Europe closer to the Americas than Asian competitors were
- The Atlantic winds and currents blow steadier than those in Indian Ocean
- Those around the Indian Ocean were already prosperous and didn't need Americas
- Europeans wanted to gain relevance in the rich world of Eurasian commerce
- Americas had good resources and land that could be used for economic growth in Europe
- Wanted to enlarge realm of Christendom
- Persecuted minorities wanted new start in life
