The Ottoman Empire (jan 1, 1299 – jan 1, 1923)
Description:
A Sunni Islamic empire that tolerated other religions, although other religions had to pay the Jizya tax. The Ottoman empire used the Devshirme system to bring young boys into their strongly bureaucratic government. This system strengthened their military corps, the Janissaries. The Ottoman empire used firearms to strengthen their military. The Colombian exchange brought mass consumption of tobacco and coffee, spreading a new business establishment: the coffee house. These coffee houses were seen as beds of sin, and outlawed, but continued to gain popularity. Other than these crops, the Colombian exchange had relatively little effect on the demographics of the Islamic empires.
