- Centralized gov ruled by king aided by nobles- Sold gold and ivory to Muslim traders for salt, copper, cloth and tools
- Principle west african state during arrival of Islam
-By 1200 gets attacked by neighboring trading societies, falls and are replaced by new trading societies like Mali
