United States in Afghanistan (oct 7, 2001 – aug 30, 2021)

Description:

The involvement of the United States in Afghanistan was an issue that lasted more than two decades. On one side, certain conservative political actors argued that the war was necessary for maintaining American interests and to prevent futures terrorism. They feared that leaving Afghanistan would be seen as a display of weakness. On the other hand, some left-wing political players saw the war as an expensive and unnecessary action that lost many American lives and funds. They argued that the conflict had turned into a never-ending dispute, and that money would be better spent on home need in our own country. Both sides used the fight to promote their respective goals and polarize Americans. The war was portrayed by the right as a symbol of American power, viewing those who opposed as unfaithful and cowardly. The war was used by the left to attack American imperialism and foreign involvement, claiming that supporters were extremists who lacked empathy for the people affected by the fight. The Afghanistan war exposed the ideological difference between the right and left, as it would become a major topic in politics for nearly 20 years after its beginning.
