Promotion Consumerism (jan 1, 1900 – jan 1, 1920)

Description:

Chain stores. Ex. Marshall Fields of Chicago = one of the first chains. Created standard sizes and made clothing easy, cheap, and quick to buy. (Before this everyone had to go to an expensive taylor that took foreverrrr).

Catalogs and Rural Free Delivery. Post Office tries to reach nearly every household in the U.S. Offices used to only exist in cities (so people in rural areas rarely checked their mail). Sears & Montgomery Ward sent a bunch of catalogs to people everywhere. Catalogs were especially a big deal for families in rural areas. The rise of the Internet hurt companies that relied on catalogs.

Results:
1) Economy grows as their are more opportunities to spend $.
2) Shared Culture. Before this, every region was different. After, most regions had similar stores and food.
