Invaded Aram (modern-day Damascus), the Hittites in south-eastern Anatolia and expanded Assyria to the Mediterranean. Patron of art, constructed palaces and temples, the Balawat Gates, Nimrud reliefs and the Palace of Ashurnasirpal.
Effective military leader and conqueror. Cruel towards his own peoples and others, massacring civilians, tortured and executed women and children, took and murdered slaves.
