Margaret Thatcher PM (jan 1, 1979 – jan 1, 1990)

Description:

Margaret Thatcher was prime minister of Great Britain from 1979-2013. She was a member of the Conservative Party and neoliberal, and was convinced to scale back the role of government. She pushed controversial free-market policies that transformed Britain. She cut spending on health care, education, and public housing; reduced taxes; and privatized or sold off government-run enterprises. Her encouragement of low and moderate income renters in state-owned housing projects to buy their apartments at rock-bottom prices created a new class of property owners and thus eroded the base of the Labour Party. Her policies resulted in heavy industries shutting down, unemployment going up, the wealth gap widening, increasing poverty, and strikes and protests that sometimes led to riots. Thatcher led a victory over Argentina in the brief 1982 Falkland War, which she used to rally support. By 1990, her popularity had fallen to a record low, and she was replaced.
