Cabrini-Green Housing Project (jan 1, 1947 – jan 1, 2011)

Description:

-Housing project that started in 1947 and was demolished in 2011
-1947-1950: CHA director Elizabeth Wood was sympathetic to racial integration and tried hard to maintain a balance between the local Italian population and nearby black residents.
-Nearby working-class white homeowners protested the integration as well, preferring that African Americans remain segregated in their own enclaves as far away as possible.
-1947: The city was looking at which parts they wanted to redevelop and they made a plan where Puerto Ricans lives. It was marked for redevelopment.
-Further South in the cities, planners designated the heart of the Puerto Rican enclave (LaSalle and Superior Streets) as “Commercial Rehabilitation and Renovation,” which was eliminating possibilities for future residential occupancy
-The Puerto Rico Migration Division recruiting Puerto Ricans living Cabrini-Green homes to help integrate tenants into the projects and improve their living conditions (stated this in another point).
-For many decades, the Cabrini-Green housing complex was as a symbol for being the worst in public housing
