Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (jan 1, 1852 – jan 1, 1924)
Description:
He was taught music at home on several instruments at a young age and attended Cambridge where he was assistant conductor, then conductor of the Cambridge Musical Society. He became the composition professor and orchestral conductor at the Royal Music College in London, where he also conducted the Bach Choir. He also wrote several scholarly discourses that appeared in music periodicals while being granted honorary doctorates from Cambridge, Durham and Leeds, finally becoming knighted in 1902.
