cubism (jan 1, 1907 – jan 1, 1925)

Description:

The revolutionary art movement known as cubism was at its height in the early 20th century from 1907 to 1925. To define it, three-dimensional forms were disassembled and put back together in flat, abstract surfaces. One of the primary ideas of cubism was the representation of the human figure in art. Artists like Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso cut the human figure into geometric planes and shapes. They challenged accepted notions of representation and perspective in doing so, creating a novel visual lexicon that put the complexity and subjectivity of perception front and centre. Cubist painters also dealt with the concept of time and movement in their depictions of the human figure, portraying several points of view simultaneously. This creative portrayal technique has had a significant effect.
