The customary approach to the human form was abandoned during the 1870–1890 Impressionism period in art history in order to portray the transitory and transient aspects of contemporary life. The invention of novel methods and tools, including photography and the portable easel, which enabled painters to work outside and record the effects of shifting light and environment, was one notable advance during this period.
