[motives] sought new cultural identity based on Africa and Islam; 1st leader Elijah Muhammad preached black nationalism, separatism, self improvement
[Malcolm X] converted whilst in prison; when released 1952, became controversial voice for mvmt; criticized MLK as ‘uncle tom’ (subservient to whites) and advocated violence (eventually laid off on the violence thing, but was assassinated by black opponents 1965)
