baroque (jan 1, 1580 – jan 1, 1750)
Description:
Between 1580 and 1750 AD, the Baroque era in art history saw significant artistic invention and dynamism in Europe. One of the most important developments during this time was the Catholic Church's sponsorship, which led to the commision of several great works of art by famous painters like Bernini, Caravaggio, and Rubens. A highly theatrical aesthetic characterised by dramatic lighting, oversized proportions, and a feeling of motion and vitality characterised the Baroque period. Another significant advance of the Baroque era was the creation of the chiaroscuro technique, which utilised light and shadow to create depth and drama. Rembrandt, whose creations typified the Dutch Golden Age, and Velázquez, who produced incredibly realistic and personal portraits, are notable painters from this time.
