mannerism (jan 1, 1520 – jan 1, 1580)

Description:

Following the Renaissance, the Mannerist period of art history, which lasted from 1520 to 1580 AD, was characterized by individualism and artistic experimentation. The Farnese family's patronage of artists like Michelangelo and Giambologna, who commissioned numerous significant works of art, was one of this period's most significant events. The emergence of the Venetian school of painting, which emphasized color and sensuality more than the more traditional Renaissance works, was another significant event. In addition, mannerism artists pushed the limits of proportion and perspective by intentionally exaggerating or distorting their works for effect. El Greco, who combined the religious subject matter of the Spanish Counter-Reformation with the techniques of the Venetian school, and Pontormo, whose highly stylized and emotional works exemplify the individualism of the Mannerist period, are notable artists from this period. Artists moved away from the classical ideals of the Renaissance and toward more individual and idiosyncratic styles during the Mannerist period, which was overall a time of artistic experimentation and individual expression.
