He was responsible for the Nixon Doctrine. Was the first President to ever resign, due to the Watergate scandal.
Nixon Doctrine: "Nixon Doctrine, a foreign policy of the U.S. government, announced by U.S. Pres. Richard Nixon in 1969, whereby the United States would thereafter support allies facing military threats with economic and military aid rather than with ground troops."

Pentagon Papers + Watergate Scandal: As president, Nixon was now in charge of regulating the Vietnam War and he had promised a quick end of the Vietnam War and the removal of American involvement. However, Pentagon papers were released which showed the true status of the Vietnam War and America’s additional advances in Vietnam. The biggest factor that decreased public trust was the infamous Watergate Scandal in which the president was involved in a robbery of the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate complex and also implanted listening devices in the White House. What made this case worse was how Nixon denied involvement but was found to be lying.
