Amish Alternative Service during Korean War and beginning of the Vietnam War (jun 25, 1950 – jan 1, 1969)
Description:
President Truman reinstated the military draft in 1948 at the beginning of the Cold War. CO's were completey exempt from the draft. CO exemption was repealed at the beginning of the Korean War. Amish COS enter alternative service as part of the I-W program, where CO's spend two years working in government or non-profit organizations that benefit society; most of these organizations exist outside of the men's home communities.
