Red Summer (jul 27, 1919 – aug 3, 1919)

Description:

As a result of the Great Migration, the so-called Red Summer marks the eruption of steadily growing tensions in inner cities into bloody race riots.

After WWI soldiers returned to the city finding factory, mill, and warehouse jobs occupied by newly arrived African Americans which lead to increasing hostility. On the other hand, African American soldiers returned from service hoping for more recognition after risking their lives but instead experienced an ongoing denial of basic rights such as adequate housing.

The Chicago Race Riot of 1919 is only one prominent example of rising tensions that resulted in mob violence, lynchings, and the destruction of African American homes across America.
