The Tang Dynasty really expanded China's bureaucracy. The examination system and the scholar-gentry were elevated. This greatly impacted how China is governed even to today. There was tension because of the rise in the popularity of Buddhism. Empress Wu (r.690-705) tried to establish Buddhism at the state religion, but there was backlash against it. .Added to timeline:
