Charlemagne was a Carolingian monarch who was able to centralize a lot of western Europe and build and empire. During most of the Post-classical period western Europe was in a decentralized Middle Ages. Charlemagne was able to reestablish church-based education and the level of intellectual activity started a slow recovery under his reign. Without Charlemagne, western Europe might have never been able to shake Middle Ages.Added to timeline:
