Description:

When the third caliph, Uthman an Umayyad, was murdered, Ali's supporters, the Shi'a, proclaimed him as caliph. The Umayyads rejected him and that led to war. This was the beginning of the split between the Sunni, Umayyad supporters, and the Shi'a (Shi'ite), who supported Ali. This division has lasted to this day and had led to many wars and deaths.
