Description:
Under the Umayyad caliphate there was great expansion. Muslim armies reached all the way to Spain in the west and India in the east. Damascus was the capital of the Umayyad caliphate and it remains an important city today. The caliphate set up a bureaucracy to rule its large empire. There was different taxation depending on who you were. The jizya was a head tax that all nonbelievers had to pay.
